Salaried Vet Surgeons

Becoming an employed vet surgeon in general practice is typical career route for Vet Surgeons after qualification.

The type and structure of veterinary practices varies widely across UK from owner proprietor vet surgeons working in their own first opinion surgery, to multi-site corporate vet surgeries with multiple vets, nurses and support staff to referral hospitals and specialised units.

New Graduate Veterinary Surgeons

Most newly qualified vets will seek an Assistant Vet Surgeon position with a practice that will provide them with an ongoing further training or mentoring programme.

Working with experienced colleagues or certificate holders will allow newly qualified vet surgeons the chance to pick up new skills and confidence once they start in their first job.

In recent years, many newly qualified vets have struggled to find their ideal position in a practice that suits them.  This is partly because of economic reasons and partly because of geographical preferences of the workforce.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that many newly qualified vets are accepting positions in parts of the UK that are not ideal.  However, they understand that  after gaining their first 18 months + experience will make their next move far easier.
